YES
R1+: GIVES PUBLICITY
R2+: PROMOTES TOURISM
R3+: SUMMARISE FACTS ABOUT THE COUNTRY
NO
R1-: GIVES A WRONG IDEA
R2-: PROVOKE PROBLEMS IN MANY SOCIAL SITUATIONS.
Over the last years there has been much controversy as to whether it is good or bad the stereotype other nationalities have about us.
Many argue that having stereotypes is by far bad for a country, while others claim that it has more pros than cons. In this essay, I will analyze the pros and cons in order to come to a conclusion.
Undoubtedly, stereotypes can give a wrong idea about the country, and can provoke problems in many social situations. It is a well known Spanish stereotype think that paella is the typical dish instead of the Spanish omelette or that all Spaniards dance flamenco when that is not true. And there is another major factor that should not be overlooked, that of stereotypes can provoke problems in many social situations such as the belief that Spanish people are lazy because we take a nap after lunch when in fact most of people are working at that time.
However, stereotypes have three major advantages, namely publicity, tourism promotion and general knowledge of the country.
Spanish stereotypes offer us a far wider range of possibilities when it comes to publicity or tourism.
Take for instance, paella as a typical Spanish dish stereotype. Experience shows that foreigners come to Spain to taste it and be assured that they will taste and find out other typical dishes. Another major advantage is that stereotypes help tourists in preparing their holidays because they summarize general facts about the country.
To sum up, even though stereotypes have some negative issues like wrong ideas of the country that can offend Spaniards because most of them are false, they can also cause publicity a tourism increasing for Spain what makes it quite clear that stereotypes are good for us.
